Whether you’ve worked in forensic science for years, or you merely have an interest in forensics, there’s no question we’ve come a long way. Forensic science technology and practices have helped officials solve numerous cases and track down the suspect of those crimes. Keep reading to learn some of the advancements in the forensic science industry.

DNA testing

We know that DNA testing has been around for a while, and it’s only improved over time. When DNA test was originally available, results used to take weeks to come in, but today officials have rapid DNA testing available. This newer method gives officials results within a few days. The technological innovation allows officials to gather data and make decisions much more quickly than before.

Digital surveillance

Between our dependence on technology and the rise in cybercrimes, forensic scientists have needed to adapt with the technology. Cybercriminals are getting smarter, but they still can’t outsmart forensics. Officials can recover files, data, and more from several different hardware devices. For instance, officials have found that criminals are saving data in alternative locations that you’d never expect, such as digital camera SD cards and gaming consoles.

Chromatography

Last but not least, forensic scientists employ a common laboratory method known as chromatography. Chromatography is the process of separating a mixture of elements into their respective compounds. This method helps scientists identify everything from the results of a toxicology report to the pen ink on a note left behind at a crime scene. Between the different types of chromatography in forensic science, officials have significantly improved their efficiency and accuracy when making decisions.

Now that you know some of the advancements in the forensic science industry, you can get back to researching because there are always new findings. Forensic science officials are similar to many other scientists in that they’re always searching for the latest breakthrough. That said, they also require accurate information and testing because they make very serious decisions every day.
